INFO ︎PLUG-IN CITY
Could Archigram’s experimental modular city ever have been the Utopia that its designers imagined? This is a plan for an exhibition exploring what it was that confined this city to paper, locked in ideas and sketches, never realised in material form. To do this a series of questions need to be asked; how does the idea of expendable architecture hold up in light of today’s society, with all the ever pressing issues surrounding sustainability and consumption? How would it actually feel to live in a city that never stops, where your home is not built to last? Four themes are used to break down the ethos surrounding this city; Urban Nomad, Space Age Society, Throwaway Architecture and Amazing Archigram. Its identity is based upon three visual cues; the shapes and colours of children’s construction toys e.g. Lego, modular design in general i.e. modular technology, and the typeface Macula Line. Each letter has been broken into parts, which can then be rebuilt into various forms.
